My folks had two neighbors, Earl and Sid. Earl was the neighborhood busybody and know-it-all. Sid was just a funny little guy who could fix anything. One day, Sid is talking to my dad and says "You know Jerry, between me and old Earl we know everything in the world." My dad asks "how's that, Sid?" Sid replies "Well, Earl knows everything in the world except that he is in an idiot, and I know that, so between us, we know everything."
An I man that I worked with was sort of a triva expert in his own mind. It was kind of strange because after he ended his surveying days, he did become a postal worker.
He once told me a story about how John Ratzenberger had originally auditioned for the role of Norm on Cheers and when he was told that he wasn't chosen, he then asked the producers "Who was gong to play the bar's know it all?" since every bar had a resident know-it-all . The producers then created the character of Clif Clavin for him.
