Dead Penguins, I never knew this!

Penguins

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica - where do they go?

Wonder no more!

It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird which lives an extremely ordered and complex life. The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life, as well as maintaining a form of compassionate contact with its offspring throughout its life.

If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social circle have been known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into and buried.

The male penguins then gather in a circle around the fresh grave and sing:

"Freeze a jolly good fellow"

"Freeze a jolly good fellow."

"Then they kick him in the ice hole."

You really didn't believe that I know anything about penguins, did you?

It's so easy to fool OLD people. I am sorry I fell for it too.

Navy for about 8 years, rode a Fletcher class Destroyer, Baltimore class heavy crusser, 3 LSTs, year with the sea Bees, year with the River Patrol forces in RVN. Shipwrecked, aground several times, ship broken in two in the South China Sea, held together by causeway lips on the sides, adrift in the Bermuda Triangle on a disabled LCVP, 600 pounds of TNT tied to and set off under my bedroom and various other adventures. Rode a 34 foot troller from Bellingham to Alaska, fished a season in SE Alaska and rode the boat back. Still carry Merchant Seamen papers but probably be laughed at if I tried to use them, did use them for one photo ID a few weeks ago.
Have spent some time at sea on ships and boats but do not consider myself a seaman.

Love it! Ships are cool!

I was a CTO in the reserve for 6 years. Went to Iceland for 2 weeks.

Just in from an old shipmate

Your penguin story reminds me of a fact I learned about Canadian Geese years ago.

Have you ever seen a flock of geese flying in the "V" pattern? Have you ever noticed one side of the V is always longer than the other? Do you know why this occurs in nature?

It is a pretty simple explanation really...

There are more birds on that side 🙂

Penguin Cartoon

Picture two penguins standing on the ice floe.......

They are looking up and watching one of their fellow penguins flying by way over their heads......

One turns to the other and says........

I guess we just weren't flapping hard enough.

Ordinary Seaman/Wiper - that was me, although I always considered myself better than ordinary. This was ore boats on the Great Lakes.

or the old classic;

one penguin says to the other, "You look like you're wearing a tuxedo!" "How do you know I'm not?" Says the other penguin.

Don B.

Just wondering - did you work on one of these, or was your time spent on the newer, 1,000+ foot long iron ore carriers?

Don B.

Thanks for asking, Scott. My boat could have been an older sister to the Irvin.

There she is, the B.F. Affleck.
In my case, being an Ordinary Seaman/Wiper meant being a dishwasher in the galley. I also made up the 2nd Mate's cabin ( more senior guys got the Captain's and the 1st Mate's cabin.) It was not particularly uplifting work:-)
