Nothing like the "end of the tunnel" and days getting longer again, albeit only by a few seconds a day at first.

we celebrate the solstice at my house. not a huge party, but an acknowledgement at least. i hate the long nights. much prefer the long (warm) days.
A good friend of mine works up in Dead Horse ("commutes" from here). The Sun went down in mid-November, and won't come back up again until sometime in January.

Since I don’t really care what time the sun rises (just as long it does), I celebrate on December 8th.
Historically it's the "reason for the season". This year I'll resort to burning Monopoly money.

Today is the birthday of one of my guys. I sang happy birthday to him in the hotel breakfast area. He was SO appriciative.....;-)
I've always teased him about being born on the darkest day of the year.....
Happy Solstice to all. Here's one from Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull, a favorite Christmas tune for me.
Solstice...the middle of winter not the beginning of winter. Think about it, afterall it is the shortest day of the year. Approximately six weeks either side and we get Halloween (first day of winter) and Ground Hog day (first day of Spring).
I see no reason why it should be called the beginning of winter. And it isn't the middle either. While it is the darkest day, it isn't the coldest. The temperature (day's temperature averaged over multiple years) lags the amount of sunlight by a few (maybe 6?) weeks.
