DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller said Monday that a California-based company has agreed to stop marketing deed retrieval services to Iowans.
Homeowners contacted the attorney general's office after receiving official-looking mailings from a company called State Record Retrieval Board. The mailings suggested they needed to obtain copies of their deed. The letters also had an offer to provide a copy of the document for $87.
Miller said officials took a closer look at the company and its owner, Neil Camenker, and that they promptly agreed to stay out of Iowa.
Miller said most homeowners can get certified copies of their deeds from their county recorder's office for around $5. They can also obtain free online copies in many counties.
There goes my million dollar side business idea.
I few years ago I got a call from some outfit called DocEdge. They offered to send me deeds for $10 a piece.
Not really a good deal when I can get them for $2 each, or $35 per month.
Docedge is a legit arm of First American Title company that I believe has more online records than any other title company in in country. I used to use them when I worked in Los Angeles. If you needed something right NOW ie. 1am ect. that is where I would turn. Soliciting offers like that though is borderline shaddy business practice IMHO.
Great heads up on "State Record Retrieval Board". I see they also have a listed office in Oregon as Im sure they have in many states. They are all over the scam websites and ripoff reports.
Not really related, but ...
One of the counties I work in has scanned plats online, but the older ones are unreadable. So I tried a document delivery company. They just sent me the same unreadble plat I can get for free online. And by same, I mean SAME. It was clearly the same TIF file.
