We in NJ are still shaking off Sandy, so prepare yourself and be sure to get batteries.

After Sandy I did not have power for a week while I was doing damage assessment at Port Newark. Nothing worse than working all day, with little to eat, and to come home to a dark house with no heat or hot water and no food.

You cannot be prepared enough.

Jim, I'd offer you a place but I don't know if Rocky Mount is any safer than where you are.?ÿ Keep safe and keep us updated.

Thanks Jake,

I expect youƒ??ll see a good amount of flooding, downed trees, and power outage. Iƒ??ll probably be up near you to measure damage to Princeville Dike sometime after the storm. That place canƒ??t catch a break.?ÿ

Iƒ??m seriously considering packing up and going southwest toward Atlanta. Couldnƒ??t find a hotel room in Columbia, SC, Augusta, or Athens. But this ole black lab we love so much needs to go with us. Looking at VRBO and AirBNB between Columbia and Atlanta that will take dogs.?ÿ

Jim,

You may be aware of an NCGS mon. on the dike at Princeville named Prince.?ÿ After one of the storms, Fran or Floyd, somebody had a 48" stake beside it that said......the monument formerly known as Prince!!?ÿ?ÿ If you get to Princeville contact me. We'll get together for a meal or something.

Yes I am very familiar with ƒ??Princeƒ?. Its under about 18ƒ? of dirt. I used it and Rockville to tie down two copper disk I set in the top of the railroad closure a little ways up the dike. We think that closure structure leaked inside the dike under the sheet pile wall during Mathew. We have video of water boiling up through the railroad ballast inside the closure while the river was still high. That structure is supposed to be replaced soon if it hasnƒ??t been already.?ÿ

Here is a nice pet friendly one in Nashville. Plus you can play with all your survey gear...Cheaper than a hotel in Nashville.

Thanks StL. Iƒ??m not opposed to going across the mountains. But I am worried about being able to get back to take care of my property, help my extended family who also live here in Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach. After that Iƒ??ll need to get back to work. All the rain they are forecasting may make it difficult to cross the Blue Ridge. So TN is low on my list if evacuation locations. Iƒ??m thinking Georgia.?ÿ

I completely understand. I crossed that route a few weeks ago while visiting Asheville. I just saw that Raleigh and Charolette may get up to 18" of rain, that's not good. Jacksonville could also be a good hiding place. Stay safe!

It's supposed to move real slow once it gets here to Raleigh. I was just on Oak Island Saturday. Awesome weather, water was perfect.

@bushaxe

As a last resort, if you don't mind camping Atlanta Motor Speedway just opened for campers or anyone else evacuating the Carolinas.

Wish you the best!?ÿ?ÿ

Predicted up to 30" of rain.....If any of you folks on the Carolina coast need a place to go you are welcome to come to my place. Specifically those with horses, I have pasture and stalls that can be used. If you have living quarters or campers you are welcome to come hang out with me and the family. I can run extension coords for 4 or 5 campers. The Charlotte Motor Speedway is doing the same as Atlanta but I imagine they will fill up at some point. I'm in Cleveland County.

fwiw....The Weather Channel's on - air hurricane expert, Dr. Rich Knapp is the most astute person that I have ever heard on TV about hurricanes. He is the former director of the National Hurricane Center.

He explains and advises on all the details of a storm like this approaching the Carolina Coast. He cuts thru the BS.?ÿ

The details that I heard him give about surge and drywall reorganization is spot on.

But this is a scary cat4 storm cruising along. It may be a good thing that it develops to a strong cat5 over the GulfStream causing the eye wall to fall apart to reorganize. This may drop it to a cat3 when it hits land. Sometime a storm gets too strong and diminishes itself.

I hope the gas stations in NC and SC have back up generators. In NJ after Sandy one of the biggest issues was no power for the gas stations.

We enacted a law that all stations have back up generators to keep people moving after the storm.

From the?ÿforecasts it is easy to say that power will be out for some for weeks if not longer.

please stay safe

This is nuts. Last night, gas stations near me (Greensboro - High Point, NC) were out of gas. Motels are full. No gas cans at normal places like Home Depot, WalMart, etc. Bought 3 at AutoZone.?ÿ

Harbor Freight sold out of generators on Sunday except for the two-cycle minis. I fired up my Honda yesterday just to be sure. Need to buy oil, though, 'cause it uses some when it's under load. Stocked up on water; we have well water, so when power goes, so does the water. We'll stockpile five gallon buckets of water for flushing and refill with rain water if necessary.

Now it seems that the storm is forecast to turn Southwest toward SC and GA. I hope the prep was not necessary.

Good luck to you guys in the storm's path. Down here in South Louisiana we know all too well about Hurricane evacuations and the aftermath from the storms.
