Most people have never heard of the "blink-and-you-miss-it" metropolis of Eva, Oklahoma. If they have heard of the place, it is normally connected to being dead center in the middle of the Dust Bowl of the 1930's. A number of photographs depicting the ravages of the Dust Bowl were published showing the area around Eva. I own a farm about a dozen miles southwest of Eva that was homesteaded by my grandfather between 1907 and 1912. Search GoogleMaps for Eva. It's an empty spot in the middle of farmland.

The current news involving Eva has four people arrested for murdering two mothers from Southwest Kansas who were traveling to Eva to pickup the children of one of the mothers, apparently from their grandmother. They were probably headed three miles further south where highways intersect. That is known as Four Corners.

Incredibly evil people. And stupid, too, to think they would get away with it. Lots of evidence, motive, means, and opportunity.

The Oklahoma panhandle - possibly one of the most desolate places on earth. Certainly in the continental US.

So much for capital punishment being a deterrence.

Mark,

You need to get out around the state more. SE Oregon, SW Idaho & N Nevada are way more desolate. You know its desolate when you have to make a 100+ mile detour because you're not sure the gas station in Denio (population 34 on a good day) will be open.

If Denio was on the Oklahoma Panhandle you could stand on the hood of your truck and see whether the station was open from 100 miles.😉

Norman's comment about the flatness of the Oklahoma Panhandle is somewhat accurate. However, if one were to travel via Colorado and New Mexico to Black Mesa, then follow whatever trails may exist, it might be possible to enter Oklahoma a short distance south of the northwest corner of the Panhandle. At that point, the viewer would be standing on the highest point in the entire State of Oklahoma. Hiking up the face of Black Mesa from the east side would be shorter but a much more strenuous activity.

Anyway, standing on the high spot on the Mesa one would be able to have a tremendous view of parts of five States. Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas and Kansas.

BTW, I have been near the base of Black Mesa just to the northeast of the high spot. That site features dinosaur tracks along the dry bed of a small creek. They really do exist!!!!!

Latest news

GUYMON, Okla. —

The four suspects accused of murdering two Kansas mothers in the Oklahoma Panhandle will remain behind bars after a judge denied bond during their first court appearance on Wednesday.

It was an emotional day in the Texas County courtroom where Tifany Adams, Tad Cullum, Cora Twomby and Cole Twomby all appeared in court in shackles and bulletproof vests.

Extra officers watched the area and kept drones and eyes on the town of Guymon.

"Do you guys know exactly what we're dealing with? Neither do we. So, we're gonna take those extra precautions to be in place that we may not normally be," Texas County Sheriff Matt Boley said.

The judge denied bond for the four suspects in the murders of Veronica Butler and Jilian Kelley – the two Kansas mothers who disappeared on March 30 while on their way to pick up Butler's children.

"My family lost a beautiful, beautiful young lady," Butler's aunt, LaDonna Thompson said.

The courtroom was heated as Butler's family members shouted profanities at the suspects. Adams sat quietly with her head down, and Cullum sat emotionless.

Cole Twombly sat quietly while his wife Cora shook her head the entire time.

As the state read the charges the four face, the first-degree murder charges face the harshest punishment of either death, life in jail or life without the possibility of parole
