Hey guys,

This is more a post for curiosity's sake. But i'm just about to enter salary negotiations with my work, and wanted to get an idea of what this skill-set would fetch out in the open world.

Experience:

1. 5 Years on an asphalt crew as a shoveler
2. 4 Years on a grade crew
3. 1 Years as a Surveyor (Using Trimble TSC3's and 880's,881's882's,and 985's, SPS900 software)
4. 2 Years as ???

Software Used: Trimble Business Centre, Autocad LT 2014, Civil 3D 2014, TCC Explorer (Full autosync), Excel, In charge of GPS software tracking units in the fleet (Includes pickups, Yellow Iron, and Dump trucks with Garmin Messaging) as well as "Reporting" features.

Hardware: Good computer, 26xTSC3's, Matching Recievers (985's and a few 88*/'s all with Sync and TCC Explorer running),8 Machines running GCS900 with Sync (Awesome), The Ususal OBD sensor GPS trackers and Various Accessories.

I don't have a formal job description, but I'm charged with getting the CAD data from engineers ready (proper co-ords and such), and fed into the machines and rovers for their given jobs (usually 9-10 jobs in mid summer, sync helps a lot), as well as the 2-3 Programs that Track our various fleet of equipment as well as the hardware procured to track them.

Its a bit overwhelming at times and don't know what to do. I can go into much greater detail with you guys but i didn't want to completely bored you with my first post.

Cheers,

Specific money amounts vary greatly across the country. But one thing is a constant:

If it would take more than one person to replace you, you're probably underpaid.

Have a discussion with your supervisor. Does he consider you to be an asset or a button pusher? Do they understand what you are doing or are you just filling a slot? Do you just take the information that is given to you or do you analyze and perform quality control? Your worth the value you bring your company. If you don't know what you are worth, don't expect then to let you know. Based on the limited amount of information you have given, it sounds like you have an important position, which can potentially produce many headaches. Determine how much you want to do the job and don't be ashamed to ask for it.

Thanks for the input guys,

To answer you're question, they have no idea what I do... GPS units are running (with 3-D models we build), as well as the machines, and they're happy... The data comes from engineers, then through me and a student we hired on at the end of last season, but we're in charge of making sure that the 10+ jobs (sometimes 20 or higher depending on old jobs) are built in the proper co-ordinate systems, in the right place, at the right height/ele (some jobs come out of retirement every now and again, but I have calibrations which makes it easy). Needless to say I couldn't check absolutely everything since that would take ages. So I focus where is needed and what would directly affect our scope of work.

Needless to say its a unique skill set I've acquired over the last few years, but i can 't find any "one" job posting describing my job, but rather a mixture of GIS analyst, Survey coordinator, Geodetic surveyor(i am asked to do field work when surveyors are busy), CAD operator, etc. I was hoping to run into another individual that might be in the same scenario, or maybe no one "should" be in this scenario.

Another thing that doesn't help my case, is that I have grade 12 High School education :).

Anyways, they just gave me the contract today, and want it signed and returned by tomorrow... no pressure eh 🙂

Call in sick for a week, if the work is at a stand still or behind schedule they will know how important you are. If things are running smoothly while you are sick, then I would tell them on Wednesday you feel alot better and can come back to work.

Sounds like a Survey Technician job to me. Check out BLS for information:

In a Texas Metropolitan area at a midsized contractor , you would be looking at the high 60's low 70's with that skill set.
