I spent 7 hours driving yesterday (McMinnville to Astoria to McMinnville) just to spend 3 1/2 hours at the ceremonies and celebrations to commemerate the 200th anniversary of David Thompson landing in Astoria. The Brigade arrived at just after 4pm in the drissle to much well deserved fanfare. Some on the expedition went the full distance of 1,000+ miles which took 45 days.

The next two photos are of Fort Clatsop, built to original plans of Lewis & Clark.
It is at the spot where they and the Corps of Discovery spent the winter of 1805.

This last photo is of Haystack Rock, at Cannon Beach.

Thanks Tyler.

I forgot to mention that while in Astoria and just by happenstance I met up with the owner and moderator of this site. Angel was standing just outside the restaurant taking a picture and Wendell was sitting inside. We all had a delightful lunch of fish and chips in downtown Astoria.

I was hoping someone would post something about this event. Thanks.

Joe of Clan Ferguson alluded to the procurement of and premeditated intent to use a small howitzer to herald the expedition’s arrival into the territories. Did that go off or did they get their powder wet?

I have a BUNCH of photos to post for this event and Wendell has tons of video!! As soon as I get me some much needed rest, I will get to work on a story and gallery for all of it. Some members of the Brigade will be coming here to our site to view these so I gotta get them up ASAP.

I have to tell you...Wendell and I had a BLAST with all of you that were there and with the entire Brigade!! We were invited to have supper with them at the high school and we were out until the wee hours with them, just hanging out and shooting the breeze. I feel extremely lucky and honored to have met them all and to have been invited to their post event party. When I am not so tired I'll fill everyone in on what exactly went down. It's a great story and I have the official Brigade flag to prove it!!

Speaking of the cannon...Oh it went off...with a HUGE bang! Actually more than one bang!! My ears were ringing a bit after the boom booms, boomed. :-$

More later...Your moderator is falling asleep at the keyboard. :-/

That was so funny, Scott!! I recognized you immediately!! 🙂

I was outside taking a photo for the owner of the restautant so I could give them a better online "Yelp" presence. Scott comes walking by and I gave him a big hug, then proceeded to go inside while yelling to Wendell, "Look what I found outside!" 😉

Of course the guys were thrilled to see each other and immediately commenced into surveying chit chat. Then we all chowed down on some damn fine fish and chips with 2 sides, all for $7.99!! Yum!!! 😀

I would have loved to be there but I'm involved in a plumbing project, replacing rust-clogged water lines, and you know what that means. Double or triple the time estimate and the cost estimate. Fortunately, it's my own time.

I also seem to have disturbed a joint in a pipe I didn't intend to deal with now and it is leaking.

Mike - Yes they did fire a small howitzer.

I was probably 60 feet feet behind it and and maybe 12 higher in elevation at the time of firing and felt the concussion from it.

I also have a few pictures and a small video that I will try to get up tonight. It was a great experience had by all. The brigade folks were amazing and so was the PLSO gang that helped welcome them to Astoria. Typical Oregon weather with the rain coming down but that didn't dampen anyone's spirit.
Cheers. More later.

MANY MANY Thanks to ALL the "Wonderful" People who helped make the GRAND ARRIVAL a memorable event. Many hands make light work. I look forward to all the pictures and memories to be shared.

Thanks Wendel and Angel for the site "beerleg" to share our photos and musings.

Jered, after we all got out of the hot tub, we took the canoer guy, Andy, and his friends back to the high school so they would not have to drink and drive, and so they could avoid the cost of getting a cab. (Well... after a "spirits" stop at Safeway. They didn't want to go back empty handed. ;-))

The Brigade invited us to come inside and join in on the festivities. We had a good ol' time just sitting around chit chatting with the group. Buncha nice folks!!! The one elderly English/Canadian guy was quite a crack up!! He kept trying to serve us Gin and Tonics. They all were in such a good partying mood...it was nice to see them winding down and happy. 🙂
