This Ken Burns documentary on PBS is excellent. The chronological eight episodes sort of re-blurs the lines between the various branches of modern day country music. The first two episodes are especially riveting (early 1900s to 1945). Great commentary by may of the folks involved in the early days and now. The Carter-Cash family, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Ray Benson, Doug Green (Ranger Doug of Riders in the Sky), my hero Guy Clark (they've been working on this for a while since Guy and Merle have gone on to their rewards) and a host of others. If you like music, any kind of music really, you're going to dig this series.
Have seen part of a couple episodes that might have been #2 and #3 or #3 and #4.?ÿ Saw all of #5 and #6.?ÿ Would like to go back and start at #1 then go through all of the others.?ÿ Did not know how many episodes there were.
Yes.?ÿ It is fascinating.?ÿ Most especially how the various sub-genres have come and gone over the years.?ÿ Most of what is produced today is a long, long way from anything I think of as country music.?ÿ We need more songs about mama, getting drunk, going to jail, rain, railroads, pickups, accidents, hanging around, spelling out bad words like D-I-V-O-R-C-E, callouses, horses and, of course, cows.
It explains a lot about American culture.?ÿ Johnny Cash sang "I walked the line" when he wasn't even close to the line, meandering all over ifunowutimean.
Well, there went a chunk of my afternoon.?ÿ Thanks.

The first season is about outlaw country and I found it fairly entertaining and informative, I really admire Mike Judge and generally enjoy his work.
I've got the shows on the DVR but I've only made it through the third episode.?ÿ Watching the "oldies" is like remembering my father on Saturday night sitting, drinking and listening to his 78s (I still have them).?ÿ
Steve Goodman wrote what he thought was the "perfect" country & western song.?ÿ David Allen Coe corrected him and told him it wasn't because it didn't mention momma, trains, trucks or...?ÿ
Oh hell, hear it from ol' DAC yourself:
The stuff they put out from Nashville and call country is way far from what my ear buds want to hear.?ÿ I enjoy the Red Dirt/Texas Country scene, it seems more like the older music I recall on the radio and jukeboxes, way before the days of music videos and CDs.
Waylon Jennings said that "Country Music is not what it once was" and that is a fact in today's music sounds that they call Modern Country Music or whatever, it ain't even close.
I've never heard anyone south of the equator sing an actual country song in modern times. The new wave is alot of guitar streaming solos and some harmonizing going on and perhaps topics that are about country things. It has a decent sound, it just ain't country anymore.
Today's Country Music Awards are given to groups that I do not consider country singers.

I could listen to modern "Country" if they just didn't have that awful exaggerated accent that I've never encountered in person anywhere in my limited travels.?ÿ It would also help if they simplified the backing bands so it was less like rock and roll (which is ok as a separate genre).

That might be why the last episode of the documentary ends with 1996. Ken Burns probably feels the same way.
Damn Mike you are totally retired now. ?ÿTime to watch documentaries! ?ÿDon??t totally leave the surveying world, you have some great survey information in that mind of years that needs to be shared. ?ÿJp
Can't believe the spelling police haven't mentioned the missing "R" in the thread title.?ÿ We read what we think we are supposed to be reading.?ÿ Proofreading our own work is incredibly difficult for this very reason.

Well considering your geographical residence location I just assumed the only type of music available would be that which was performed by residents of your "county". 😉 ?ÿ

Any show that has Townes Van Zandt and Emmylou Harris on the same episode is fine with me.

Well, at least I didn't leave out the "O" too!
"3 chords and the truth"
Well, at least I didn't leave out the "O" too!
Guy I knew in High School had to do some stupid "graphic" project for American History class and made a Revolutionary War recruiting poster where he internationally left the "o" out.?ÿ ?ÿDishonorably discharged from the Navy before his 21st birthday; heard he's in prison now
and made a Revolutionary War recruiting poster where he internationally left the "o" out.
So, he had one foot in the U.S. and the other in Canada when he made it?
