Last year I posted about my Wife's copperhead hunting in this thread.
https://surveyorconnect.com/community/threads/copperheads-again.327610/

So far this year we are up to about 9 copperheads and one coral snake. Those were found the last week of June. I posted a pic of some of them in the thread "Standing in line for a drink of water" posted last week by imaudigger.

This is a more complete story about copperheads and their taste for cicadas. I think it is actually the same story with updated and more complete information. Good reading for those in copperhead country.

It was a good and informative read.

Years ago I had a place east of here in the thick of some oak cross timber country. Copperheads were a constant presence. I eventually cleared all the trees and leaf litter around the house for about 100' in favor of a Bermuda grass lawn just so the kids could have a clean place to play (they played in the woods anyway). The clean grass didn't seem to reduce the snake population however.

I did keep my lawnmower handy on the patio. When one of the kids would holler "snake" I would run out, give the Briggs a tug and dispatch the snake to the great hereafter. There were days I might kill six or seven but the average was around two or three a week.

ps - I don't think snakes can hear, but they still run fast when you're chasing them with a lawnmower. If the lawnmower isn't handy a garden hoe is the next best thing. 😉

The best way to kill a snake is to cut off his tail...................right behind his head. Unless they are right at the house, like yours are, I don't kill even poisonous snakes anymore. My wife is deathly afraid of snakes so I'll relocate them to the nearby woods.

I few weeks ago while back home in Kentucky I stopped by Wild Turkey for a tour. The guide, while waiting for the next group to advance offered up his opinion of snakes to make small talk with another guy in the group..."There are three types of snakes I don't like, big ones, small ones and ones that look like sticks".

Couldn't agree more.
