Saw the Delta Mariner a couple of weeks ago when it was locking thru Ky Dam, which is about 20 miles north of this bridge. Actually drove up to the dam to see what it was. Hauls rocket boosters and such to Huntsville.
I'm guessing they don't fix that bridge, as there's supposed to be a new one built next to it in the next few years. Wonder how much insurance money they'll get?
Here's a pic..
They are saying 2 spans are down, can't tell from the photo. Part of a span is hung across the front of the boat.
This sort of thing is not uncommon. Our ocean bay bridge gets hit occasionally. New designs for bridges have increased the span widths and they now build sand canister barriers around the piers in the channel as a buffer. Threading a oil tanker through a channel with 6 feet of clearance on each side of the ship can be tense.
On the way home from the meeting last night, Chris called to tell me about that.
I wonder if that will be enough to fast track the new bridge?
And wouldn't you know it, this morning I had an e-mailed response from a fellow giving the go ahead on a little bit of work in Calloway Co. With the bridge down, I think it is an extra 50 miles one way for me to get over there.
Good luck on the go-ahead for new work, bad luck on that extended trip Jon.
Couple more pics
Drove over and looked at it. He was 2 spans off the channel on the LBL side. Was at a Preconstruction meeting this morning at the District Office. They said it was a 300' span that's down, but the one still up on the LBL side might have moved. didn't look like he hit a pier, just wasn't in the channel and didn't have enough clearance. I'm guessing the guy driving had to duck. There was also a fiber optic line that got taken out, so internet around here is pretty slow as it's being routed around.
Looks like the asphalt we put on it last year held up pretty good though.
Story from Florida
I wondered if he went home that way.
Looks like he has a bridge on the Bridge 🙁
My guess there was a engine problem and loss of power that caused the accident-I haven't read much though.
