Looking for a new car GPS. I've tried phones, but I prefer a stand alone unit. Anyone have any preferences? I have an older TomTom that I liked, but was thinking about one of the ones with free lifetime maps. Nuvi vs. Via?

I'm kinda partial to a Garmin 12 and a fist full of 7½ USGS Quads myself!

I've had and used TomTom and cheaper units. For the money, I don't see a whole lot of difference. Of course being a man I am never lost, I just use the GPS as a speedometer in my old truck that the speedometer is broken in. 😛

That is what I use Loyal, except in town where I use maps to get around. That is what I used when driving truck cross country, it seems to work as good now, as it did then.

I like the Nuvi's...all our trucks have them. I'm not sure if the other brands allow for Long./Lat. input...Nuvi does. This come in handy for rural surveying...where address input is tough.

Like you said, smart phones are awesome...(love my Droid 3) but it's nice to have a dedicated GPS Nav unit for the trucks.

Garmin has been my choice for awhile

The nuvi1490LMT has 5" screen and will Bluetooth to your phone. Last week I saw it for about $154

A nuvi2300LM has 4.3" screen at about $124

Both will give voice directions ornot and there is a $39yr subscription that allows download of many types of maps from topo to aerial photos.

The GPSMAP 60CSx will also map out a route for you but it only has 2.6" screen.

I added a 16gb mini SD and put 24K topo on all of these

The upgrade downloads are about 1.5gb in size

Been using a Garmin Nuvi (one of the 700 series, I think the 760) for a few years now.

Only beef is that the updates take a long time (and are a touch expensive).

Yeah.....mine was a gift, and I didn't know about a lifetime update offer for $29 until it was too late.

Next time.....:-(
