I watched JPL land their latest space lab on Mars about an hour ago. An amazing feat. That last few minutes flew by much faster than I expected, a little bit like one of those 100m races recently run in London, a reverse dragster. Whatever happens it is a testament to American technology.

It's a great day for the USA and Science. I am so proud of NASA. Great job, guys!
:good:
Indeed! Seven minutes of terror. Congrats Curiousity Team!
I get the terrors if I try to imagine the pressure on the guys who have to sign off that each part of the design, each system, is ready to go to launch.
The newspaper said a half-million lines of software in the machine. Do you know of any large software that is close to correct?
Now that was AWESOME!!
Was worth staying up for. Could see & feel the excitement build in the JPL control room each time each step in the plan was confirmed accomplished.
I guess I am a killjoy, but I think the money could have been better spent on nearly anything.
aren't you a lil Curious?
Wait....................there are people that actually believe this thing is on the surface of Mars?????
😉
They caught a picture ....
while it was descending.

That's just plain sad...
the first new photo sent by Curiosity after landing!

"Oh No!!! It's the plutonium Q-36 space modulator and that creature has stolen it!!!"
I don't remember for sure that was the right character, but it got me laughing soon as I saw that pic and then that quote ran through my head.
Marvin the Martian
BigE came very close with the 36 thingy. It's Illudium PU-36.
I am glad we are back to exploring. Too bad we have nothing else in the budget for more explorations.
But this did make me laugh:
Marvin the Martian
I haven't found any authoritative source, but the general sense on the web is that the cartoons originally had a Uranium Pu-36 Explosive Space Modulator and it was changed to Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator in later productions, perhaps because PU is the symbol for Plutonium and they wanted to get away from real nuclear material.
