I was so embarrassed.?ÿ It was devastating.?ÿ Two girls from my school were nextdoor neighbors to each other out in the country.?ÿ It turned out they were born on the same day, one year apart.?ÿ They decided to have a combined birthday party............and I was invited.?ÿ So, I went.
Something like 25 kids present and it turned out I was the only boy invited to be there.?ÿ Oh, the agony.?ÿ Turned out the one gal had a crush on me that I didn't know about.?ÿ When little boys are 8, going on 9, the main thing they know about girls is that they all have cooties and no one wants to get girl cooties.
On Facebook today, I saw that little gal being congratulated on turning 68 in a photo along with her grandson who happens to turn 18 today.

Back at that point in time I only knew that girls had cooties but had no idea what a cootie was.?ÿ My big sister had warned me to never touch a girl or I would get cooties.?ÿ That was enough of a warning for me.
The most enjoyable part of being at the birthday party was that it got me out of a hot afternoon driving a tractor in some field for some reason.?ÿ The cake and Kool-Aid were treats, too.

At a family 4th. of July picnic at Uncle Jasper's place in Dougherty, OK the piece-de-resistance of the day was homemade and hand-cranked (is there any other kind?!) ice cream.?ÿ The flavor was peach.?ÿ Aunt Gerdie was cleaning out the cellar shelves and had several Kerr jars of kitchen-canned peaches that were needing used up.?ÿ As was her habit, she had the date scrawled on the lids.?ÿ I was the youngest in attendance and someone noted the dates pre-dated my arrival by a year.
The ice cream was still wonderful.?ÿ
I can still smell Gerdie's cream skillet gravy when I close my eyes....?ÿ
