What do you like?
Wife wants a margarita 🙂
I'm a Herradura guy, but it's more of an "on the rocks" tequila than a mixing tequila
El Jimador is a good tequila. Patron is not bad, also.
I also prefer to not drink tequila in a mixed drink; it makes the tattoo hurt more in the morning...
Jose Cuervo 1800 Anejo, but it's more of a sipping drink than a mixing drink.
-- "Once men sang together round a table in chorus; now one man sings alone, for the absurd reason that he can sing better. If scientific civilization goes on . . . only one man will laugh, because he can laugh better than the rest."
And I will be the one laughing. I can't sing, but I damnsure know how to laugh.:-)
Sorry, I don't have anything to contribute to the tequila discussion.

In my opinion El Jimador is probably the best tequila commonly available for the money. Making margaritas? I'd buy the Blanco rather than the Reposado, but that's me. If you want to spend a bit more money, Herradura Blanco is what I'd use for margaritas. Both are high-quality, 100%-blue-agave tequilas.
I never got into to tequila. Whiskey on the other hand, different story. 😉
Waboritas thank you very much. 🙂
I'm a bit late to help for your wife's margarita (I'm guessing she wanted it before now) - but I have quite a bit of tasting experience 😉
for margaritas, I like Cassadores reposado because of the tart tequila taste, Corralejo reposado comes in a close second, and a less-expensive choice would be Hornitos reposado. each of those have a nice tequila taste in a margarita, altho many would say there is no such thing as a nice tequila taste.
it's interesting to note that a lot of tequilas advertised as 100% agave, are not 100% blue agave (the Weber blue perhaps the most popular). After the fungus blight years ago, a faster growing white agave was often added to the mix of blue agave to maintain the 100% agave labeling. (tequila, to be called tequila, needs to only be made from 51% agave spirits, the remainder can be grain alcohol, or other spirits not even mentioned on a label).
Patron may be one of the most popular tequilas, however, for me, there is not enough of that "tequila" taste to use for margaritas, or for sipping for that matter - the taste just disappears too fast (maybe why it's popular).
high-end tequilas range from $30+ per fifth, to well over $100 and far beyond for some collector issue bottles.
there are a lot of varieties, but after years of testing, my very favorite for sippping is Corazon reposado. close behind: Sauza Tres Generations anejo, Corralego anejo. others we like: XQ anejo, La Familia and Porfidio.
there are SO many varities, and seems everyone will pick one they like much more than others; and like beer, some like whatever is put before them at the moment.
enjoy.
