It sounds as if the logger is trying to direct attention toward the "surveyor" (who may or may not be a surveyor), but I'd think whoever actually cut the timber is liable for the trespass. THEY can go after anyone who misled them, but I doubt that the timber cutters would be somehow exempt from damages equal to some multiple of the value of the timber in damages.

She needs to get an attorney and sue for damages. Someone should be carrying insurance to pay.
Most likely, she will be offered a fair out of court settlement but it will take time.

Right.

Surveyors don't mark which trees to cut. The Forester does that.

I went through this a few years ago. Grandma raised a good family. Most all the family left Mississippi to pursue a better life. Grandma passed after a very long life. The family came home to bury Grandma. After the funeral they gathered on the family land, that was deeded to Great Grandpa after the Civil War, to rejoice their Heritage. What a shock it was to see 20 acres of mature White Oaks gone. Could had been another 20 acres if the family hadn't came home. They were outraged!! They found me. We talked. I advised them to contact the county DA. Let me survey the property, noting the timbered area. Hire a Forester to count and measure the stumps. I did my task. Gave them a damage map, and an overall plat of the property. The Forester gave them a count, and value of the timber. The DA found the perpetrators. Seems it was a first cousin who paid the taxes for the property early before they were due. He had a tax recite that he gave to the timber boss. So I guess they felt that would cover them. But the cousin and the timber boss were doing this all over several counties. BUSTED when the family came home to lay Grandma to rest. They sent me a thank you letter. And updated me. The cousin and the timber boss went to prison for a few years. The family was awarded 3 times the Stumpage value. If I was this lady I would do the same thing.

$500, that adds "insult" , to "injure".
