I watched a crew of six Amish men erect a 60'x300' metal hanger in a week. The guys tore into it at sun up and didn't look up until sundown.

Guess they're workin' hard in PA, too.

When I built my house my builder hired a framer who was family based (father, two sons, etc). They did a good job, but were expensive (and slow). The next house he built he used Amish from Ohio for framers. They pay some guy $180/day to drive them in his van from Ohio to the job site, then back home again. I think there was eight of them, got the job done much faster and cheaper. I doubt there was any sacrifice in quality, as they are good workers.

That said, I wouldn't like to have to compete against the Amish for a survey project, but I reckon they wouldn't be using any modern equipment (GPS, total station, CAD), so I probably needn't worry.

I saw a program last week about how when they are 16 they are turned loose to do whatever they want (party, work, date, etc). Then, when they are 18 or so they need to decide if they want to become Amish or "English".

I believe they call that "rumspringa". Don't know much else about that, though.

The crew here in OK had a driver and a van, also. The driver was one of the crew, but I think his name was 'Antonio'....

Although they wore all hand made clothing, they had all the modern equipment; air-ratches, torches, generators..some heavy equipment..a cherry picker and a front loader..but they didn't drive on the public roads. They didn't eat fast food, either. One told me, "The grease makes you lazy."

He was probably right.

I suspect if they surveyed they'd have the latest and greatest equipment...and a driver. I'd almost bet there's an Amish Land Surveyor in PA.

Reminds me of watching Jehovah's Witnesses put up a Kingdom Hall from vacant lot to a finished building in a long weekend. I guess they're kind of religious about their work.
