I am 47. I have no disability insurance. I am thinking of buying some. My wife has been a stay at home mom for 20 years. My kids are 20-17-14.

I would appreciate hearing your thoughts and opinions?

A coworkers was recently singing the praises of Aflac after a cancer diagnosis and surgery that ran him 25k out of pocket and the VA wouldn't cover the surgery because it was still 'experimental' in the US, but not Canada, Sweden, Britain and all the rest of the developed world.

I carried private disability insurance for many years, but eventually decided that the benefit didn't justify the cost, so I dropped it. It's a gamble either way, you'll have to make the risk assessment for your own situation.

Brad, my thought is that it is shocking that you raised children without disability insurance when your wife had no income. With all due respect, that is one of the most thoughtless things I have ever heard of. What do you imagine would have happened to all of them had you been disabled? Now that the kids are mostly grown it doesn't make much sense. You should have gotten it the day you were married, and certainly the day you held that first little one...

Well, my wife just told me that her plan was to become a prostitute. She says if I was going to be on my back she might as well be on hers. Probably would make more money anyway.
