Looking at bids received for a small construction project. Previous bids on fire hydrant installation lump sum have been in the $2k range. Today's average $10k. What the heck? Is there a run on fire hydrants right now? I realize that a lot of steel is mfd in Japan, but this seems ridiculous.

Was there a "miscount" on the bid sheet as opposed to the plans? I've seen that where the number of manholes was miscounted (shown 2 on bid sheet when there was actually 20), then cut the price of other items to the bone to get the job and make up the difference in the extra quatities.

Just got news of a bid award for some pre-design survey of a new road. There were only 3 proposers. A few months ago a similar job had 19 proposers.

Maybe the lowballers are finally out of business.

Or the non-lowballers finally gave up.

A very small job. Only one fire hydrant on the plans. We are having some labor shortages out here. I wonder if that is a factor.
