@rover83 I love this analogy. One thing I would caution Surveyors is that GIS can be positionally very accurate. Its all about the data and how it was derived. ?ÿI established highly accurate geodetic surveys in other countries. While serving in the USMC. That data was also placed into a gis database. And appropriate metadata and notes. So while the visualization might not be exact the underlying geographic coordinates were the gospel. Depending on the imagery accuracy and resolution was how well it looked. But I would to this day export the coordinate values and do whatever needed to be done. No different than what we see when we navigate through NGS website today and see the icon on the map its not perfect but the data sheet that comes out is about as close as it can get. So GIS is as good as its data positionally. The biggest issue I see is that cartographers are no longer doing the work and GIS has become a software gurus and not Geodesy or cartography skills and knowledge being applied. In surveying we call the cad monkeys button pushers or COGO Commandos. Those that are good at running software but not thinkers. Had a awesome surveyor over a brew tell me why can??t they put the lots in where we tell them to in the GIS. I said well how do you know they haven??t. He said i know the property line is X feet on the other side of a tree line but they moved my plat. I said are you sure maybe the imagery is just off and your coordinates don??t match the imagery so its right and imagery is wrong. Anyway most of the time the municipality just rubber sheet and thats not good. But if they were wise they could rubber sheet to make it look pretty and simultaneously keep the plat coordinates in the data set correct. That would make everyone happy. Why they don??t who knows. Laziness or lack of knowledge. But you have a great way with words. Very nice write up for sure.
