Hi I??m tom from nj . I??ve been doing some research on my land plot at my parents house and I??m not really sure on some of the corners or starting points of what I found . For example the one point when I dug it up to look for a pin I found a crumbled coffee can , a broken plate , old style beer bottles , bent nails and big and small rocks . I only dug down about 2 feet . Also according to the starting point and another point on the road there??s these iron pot looking things in the road partly or almost covered by asphalt . My measurements lead me to the points almost exactly . There not gas or water or c.p test covers because those are all labeled about 15 feet away . Am I crazy to think these could be what a surveyor left back in the day? I will attach pictures of the different road findings and the ones I. The ground . The one road thing had a white s in s box by it . Thanks in advance ! Tom from nj

The last 2 pictures just look like trash. It’s not unusual for people to throw their trash in the corner of the yard.
The others may be the remains of bases of old metal fence posts.

What information are you working from? An old survey, a deed description, the tax map?
If your source does not explicitly describe the corner monuments, you need to know what is common in the area for the time the parcel was created and what was typical for more recent surveys.
If you haven’t found vertically set concrete posts, pipes, rebars, or something else known to have been common in the neighborhood I would be doubtful you have found corner monuments..
Hi bill I??m working from actually all 3 of those things . I??ve been to the clerks office and have the original deed from 1936 a survey and a tax map from the 60s and present all showing that as the point of beginning . I just have a copy of the survey . It only says spike set . Usually the corner monuments in pavement have a cap on it I think with the surveyors info but I don??t see it cuz it??s party buried . As far as the other things I dug up I think the surveyor was using it as a reference point . Lots of nails grouped in one spot . I appreciate u getting back to me I find this stuff interesting . Would the white painted ??s? in a box next to the thing in the ground be a marking for survey (first picture) I??m going to see if I can contact the surveyor and see if he has any notes I can pay him for
