Land survey for permits

  • Land survey for permits

    Good morning,

I need to submit paperwork for zoning and building permits and cannot find a copy of my survey that was done back in 1994.  I do know who did the survey but can’t find him anywhere on the web.

Trying to avoid having to get another survey done…can anyone help and point me in the right direction?

    Thanks,

    DL

It will help if you let us know where you are located.

Chances are high that you will need a new survey. When people call my office asking about projects that old, I have to tell them that the surveyors who worked here are all gone, the computer systems are all different, and that most of the project info is on paper anyway. I will have to practically start from scratch, some of the information in the project file may be useful, but it won’t really save me any time / them money.

@peter-lothian One also has to consider the standards at the time of the original survey vs. the standards of today.

Not all surveyors are on the web.  Check your state licensing agency to find the surveyor.

You indicate ‘my survey’.  Do you mean for you or a survey of your property?  Just fyi, and depending on what locale the surveyor is in, a copy of a survey may be deemed up to date when surveyor furnishes same to someone.  I doubt I would give you a copy of a 1994 survey printed today unless it was recorded.

You say you need for zoning and building permits.  Are you building a new building or an addition? Shouldn’t you or your architect/designer have used a survey to site the building on the property?  What type of zoning permit do you need?  Are you rezoning the property?

    Hope this helps

If your municipality is anything like the ones here in S.E. VA, you will need an updated survey due to the age of that survey.
