Of Course You Have To Pay Your Dues....

....you have to be a surveyor.

After that the rest is only money.

We are happy that you are here.

We are happy that we are here.

We are happy there is a here.

PS, as to the other board which claims to have 30,000 members, very darn few are surveyors.

Scott, Quoting Me Out Of Context?

The Keith comment was an aside, I believe it is more critical to criticize that list of 30,000 members.

Are they really members or merely Blondie's Facebook Friends or even imaginary friends?

I believe POB is not well served by such media misrepresentation.

The magazine is still well worth the price.

Resonal Question (Maybe) For Wendell

Surveyor Connect has 2698 registered users.

Are 2,000+/- surveyors or in the industry?

You may not have a record and one can understand if you are unwilling to share.

I seriously doubt a board claiming 10 times your membership worries you.

I a not one to wish that other board goes away or changes it's ways.

What I do miss was the activity on the manufacturer's side forums. Not just that they were there but that the manufacturer's seemed to care that they were there and followed them.

Fortunately a few manufacturer's reps have gone where their customers and users are.

Resonal Question (Maybe) For Wendell

There is no way to truly know how many of our registered users are actually surveyors. But I think it's probably a reasonable assumption that 2,000+ of our members are surveyors or in a very closely related field. The site is marketed specifically at surveyors, which is why you have to be registered to see non-surveying related topics.

We see every registration as it occurs via email notifications and we see the email addresses used for same (but we never share those email addresses nor will we). The reason I bring this up is that many of the emails are on domains of surveying-related companies, and for those using Gmail, MSN, etc., the usernames often make it pretty obvious that they are surveyors. The fact that I am a surveyor helps too, because I may recognize a person's name and am familiar with surveying terms.

I don't think 30,000 registered surveying-related users is impossible to have, but I do think that you have to assume some duplication and "fluff", especially when you consider the old way of registration on that previous surveying forum. You might recall that back before 2010, it was easy to register multiple accounts with the same email address (a very welcome feature for spammers) and lots of people had multiple accounts based on the computer they were using. That's probably true to a certain extent here as well (except for the spammers -- we delete and block those upon discovery), although to a much lesser extent because each of our accounts is tied to a specific email address which can only be used for a single account. That doesn't mean there aren't duplicates (using different email addresses), but there are systems in place to minimize that here and in most forums these days.

I would guess that maybe anybody who has ever been registered over there is counted. I haven't even looked at it in a couple of years but mat still be a member. I haven't been getting the magazine for awhile though.

Paul says “you have to be a surveyor,” and I hope he includes non-surveyors who are seriously trying to learn more about surveying. This site has done a tremendous amount for me by taking much of the steepness out of the learning curve. For that and a lot more—humor, compassion, camaraderie, and occasional bursts of spectacular beauty or flat-out weirdness of the sort that sticks with you and makes you healthier—I am deeply grateful. I don’t even have to like beer. Thanks, Wendell and Angel, for so very much.
