Engineer Tech III - Survey

SALARY: $4,436.00 - $5,135.00 Monthly

JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is a technical position that serves as a member of a survey crew, providing survey work on Public Works projects including preliminary, right-of-way, property and construction.?ÿ This position acts as a Party Chief and/or instrument operator responsible for the operation of a full range of survey equipment including theodolites, automatic levels, rod level, transits, electronic measuring devices, and other equipment used to measure distances, horizontal/vertical angles and elevations. This position will receive work assignments from the Department's Professional Land Surveyor.

JOB DUTIES:
  1. Lead and direct the work activities of assigned Survey Crew staff, ensuring that all work is performed in a safe, efficient, and cooperative manner, in accordance with the program and department procedures.Provide assistance in the development and training of new or supporting personnel.
  2. Address personnel matters according to established procedure and make daily and timely reports on all personnel matters.
  3. Perform accurate vertical and horizontal surveys for design of projects.
  4. Perform accurate surveys for rights of way of County roads.
  5. Perform accurate surveys of properties.
  6. Perform accurate construction surveys including; setting line, grades and stakes.
  7. Operate all of the surveying equipment and be responsible for its care.
  8. Take accurate notes and sketches of all work done.
  9. Perform general administrative duties to effectively administer and document the activities of engineering projects.Maintain accurate and timely department records.
  10. Attend and participate in department meetings.Present recommendations and ideas to enhance the division's performance and services it provides.
  11. Attend and participate in county sponsored training.Research and stay up to date on issues pertinent to the department.
  12. Answer questions from the general public regarding particular area(s) of expertise.
  13. Assist with the development and maintenance of department files, databases and other information systems.
  14. Performs research activities in County and State records.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Minimum of eight (8) years of demonstrated knowledge in surveying through a combination of work experience in surveying on Public Works projects, formal education, and/or training.
  2. Ability to operate a full range of survey equipment as described herein.
  3. Ability to read and interpret project specifications, maps and technical drawings.
  4. Ability to utilize geometry and trigonometry as applied to the computation of angles, areas, distances, and traverses.
  5. Ability to use a personal computer and working knowledge of current software programs applicable to the job.
  6. Ability to interact with the public and/or contractors, perform technical research work on routine surveying problems, analyze data and provide professional opinion based on solid surveying principles to a variety of internal and external contacts, communicate professionally both orally and in writing; understand department policies and procedures as well as work standards and codes applicable to the job.
  7. Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted driver's license (except for vision).

Required Skills and Abilities:

  1. Possess excellent advanced mathematical skills and knowledge of modern surveying methods, practices and techniques, and other fields as they relate to construction and maintenance of public works and public utilities.
  2. Effectively complete the essential job functions independently as well as being able to work well in a team environment.
  3. Follow and enforce established policies and procedures and attain rigorous high level quality controls.
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills. Establish and maintain effective working relations with employees, other county employees, other agencies staff, sub-contractors, and citizens.Able to tactfully deal with the public.
  5. Modern supervisory skills to lead and direct the work of assigned staff, provide clear instructions and training, and make effective decisions.
  6. Able to organize and prioritize in order to effectively work in a multi-task and busy work environment with demands from multiple sources and projects.Efficiently work in a demanding and political environment.
  7. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  8. Possess research and data analysis skills, with the ability to arrive to appropriate conclusions, and make recommendations.
