JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Engineering Services Specialist Date: May 23, 2014
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports To: Regional Manager
PHYSICAL DEMAND CLASSIFICATION: Light (Occasionally lifts up to 25 pounds)
Schedule: Approximately 9 hours per day from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with 1 hour lunch break; 5 days/week. May be required to work evening shift(s) and/or weekends.
JOB SUMMARY:
Develops 3D positioning data sets, performs engineering analysis, and supports the company’s fleet of GPS guided equipment and survey devices. Works closely with Regional Engineer, Project Managers, Project Engineers and/or Estimators. Travel to remote projects and out of town projects is a part of this position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Analyzes information gathered from site inspections, contract drawings, specifications, proposals, and other documentation.
• Participates in preconstruction evaluations to identify potential risks.
• Performs earthwork quantity studies and supports estimating as needed with various take-offs.
• Participates in the project procurement process, including material buy out, submittals, and the pursuit of value added substitutions.
• Uses Autodesk Civil3D and Trimble Business Center to develop surfaces and linework for guided machines and survey devices. Verifies that the data issued to the field is accurate, constructable and per plan.
• Identifies conflicts and resolves ambiguity in the engineer/owner’s design. Works with Project Engineers and Project Managers to generate RFI’s that address plan inconsistencies.
• Updates model data when provided with revisions from Project Managers or Project Engineers.
• Maintains organized file system following established naming/versioning conventions.
• Builds machine cards in Trimble Business Center.
• Creates exhibits to assist in the planning or execution of the work.
• Prepares as-built drawings from topographic data collected on the job site.
• Must be able to travel up to 30% of the time.
OTHER FUNCTIONS.
• May perform duties of Project Engineer.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

SKILLS/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration or equivalent work related experience.
• Must have at least one to five years of general civil construction experience.
• Must be an advanced user of a 3D modeling program such as Trimble Business Center or Autodesk Civil3D.
• Must have first aid and CPR Training.
• Must have excellent oral skills to communicate effectively with customers, employees, design professionals, and management.
• Must have excellent negotiation skills.
• Must have a thorough understanding of surveying and machine guidance equipment and software.
• Must have a thorough understanding of drafting.
• Must have computer experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Professional.
• Must be able to comprehend complex math concepts including geometry, algebra and trigonometry to measure, calculate and forecast.
• Valid driver’s license is required.
• Clean driver’s abstract of record is required.
• Understands the different signals used at construction sites.
EQUIPMENT, MACHINES, TOOL, VEHICLES USED:
GPS Rover, computer, printer, cell phone, two-way radio, two/four-wheel drive truck, measuring tape, calculator, copier, fax machine, hand tools. Safety equipment includes respirator, gloves, hard hat, full shield glasses, ear plugs, safety vest, harness and closed toe work shoes.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Environmental Exposure:
Inside: 75% Outside: 25% Temperature: Air conditioned trailer
Work is performed primarily indoors. Indoors, employee will be in contact with chemicals (i.e., toner for copier and facsimile machines), and materials (i.e., paper) normally found at offices.
While outdoors, employee will be exposed to all types of weather and temperatures. Employee may be in contact with materials (i.e., dust and particles) and noxious odors (i.e., diesel) normally found at general civil construction worksites. Employee will also be exposed to high levels of noise and vibrations. Employee may also be exposed to wet and humid conditions.
Vision and Hearing:
Must be able to clearly see the computer monitor with or without corrected vision. Must be able to judge or distinguish distance and space relationships. Must be able to differentiate and/or identify colors.
Must be able to hear within a normal range with or without a hearing device.
