I haven't personally used a zip level, but have discssued their use with others who have.

They are being used and misused extensively, in assessing buildings and properies post earthquakes in Christchruch New Zealand.

They are an Altimeter with a reel and the tube, a sensor/controller on the free end of the tube, you set the reel and place the sensor on the surface you want to level and measure, or use a short pole (Unipod). Very good for getting into coners of rooms inside buildings or around buildings were line of sight for obsevations or lazers is not practical. Only limit is the tube.

Yup - they are pretty common here. We have a couple of them.

They do work well inside buildings, but have a few gotchas. They have to be used with some care. The tube needs to be laid out dead flat and well supported - any movement will skew the numbers. Also changing sunlight or heat on the tube can do the same.
