I am in the process of studying for the Wyoming State Exam. Do any of the Wyoming surveyors out there have any suggestions on some good reference material, and a way to approach studying for this exam? I have collected most of board suggested references from the reference material list located on the Wyoming Board of Registration's website. The only thing that concerns me is possible questions on hydraulics. Any help would be much appreciated.

From what I can remember, you need to know how to design a ditch to carry so much water in order to irrigate so many acres, size, depth of the ditch, etc, so you need to have a grasp of some hydralic formulas. It has been more than 40 years since I took the exam, so don't remember much about it all anymore. It was not an NCEES based exam in those days. Was a narrative and very involved process then, written by a member or members of the Board, and was not a minimum competency, true/false or multiple choice questionaire type of exam. It also was not an open book exam. There was also a 20 question portion you had to submit and a boundary surveying experience documentation that you had to submit before you were notified if you would even be allowed to sit for the exam after you had sent in all the paper work and the fees.

Thank you Charles. That is kind of what I was figuring. I am getting ready to send off my application, and hope to take the exam this summer. We will see how it goes.

I don't know what the exam consists of today. At one time on the take home exam, it was necessary to prepare a water rights application and determine ditch flow or hydraulics in relation to a pump system (depending on the chosen method of conveyance to the area to be irrigated). I'm sure if you study the references supplied by the board, it will get you through just fine. I graded the take home exam for many years. If you have any questions about the exam, I can tell you where to look or what area to study and will not give you the answers as that would take all the fun out of it!!B-) You can get my contact info by doing a search in Cheyenne WY

I would listen to Paul, he graded my exam.
By the way, the Wyoming state exam is the best, most comprehensive state exam that I have seen (and I have taken the California test).

Oregon was the best, ie most comprehensive from the three I've got.

Chris, Good Luck with the exam prep.

Thanks Jered. I agree with you about the Oregon Exam. Very well rounded compared to the other two I have taken.

I realize I'm reviving an old thread here, but wanted to check in and see how things went with the exam. I am preparing for the same exam and would like to get some direction from you for areas to study, if you're willing.
