Been trying to troubleshoot another office's R-8 system and just going through the motions with all of my normal checks and I can't find anything wrong so far. One of the fellas is complaining that he's not getting enough satellites in wide open sky.
I have 2 identical R8 rovers set up with the exact same styles. One gets 14-15 satellites one gets 8-9 satellites. Going into the satellite screen the same satellites are being tracked, the only difference is ALL of the "R" satellites are not "In solution"
Same SW, FW, all updates and the like.
Is there a setting somewhere that I've never had to use or look for?
Hi,
What software?
speaking for Trimble Access and here in flanders we use a Trimble VRS system for our RTK work.
Depending on the mountpoint or server we choose we have GPS only or GPS+GLONASS solutions.

When we purchased our R8's, TGO couldn't process glonass satellites (still can't). So we set up two survey styles, one that would allow my R8's to be rovers with a 5700 base that is called "RTK and INFILL" (it actually came with that) and another that is simply called RTK. Now, in RTK, we cannot make an infill shot (PPK). However, we can see the Russian birds. In RTK & INFILL, we cannot see the Russian birds but can make infill shots.
My suspicion is that you have a survey style going that only uses NAVSTAR. That would prevent the Russian birds from showing up in a solution, since they were never part of the equation.
I've seen this happen a time or two. If you haven't tried it already, you might try rebooting the rover head. Here's the instructions:
Trimble R8 Systems
1. Start with the receiver turned off – all LEDs dark and with power connected to the receiver. Prepare to press and hold the green power button for the better part of a minute.
2. Press and hold the green power button – the elapsed-time (ET) points below are from
the time at which the operator starts to hold the green power button.
3. Within the first six seconds or so the green power LED may or may not flash on for a small fraction of a second then go off, then all three LEDs will come on for around three seconds and then go off. (Release the green power button and start over if you do not see all three LEDS light and then go off.)
4. At around 20 to 25 seconds ET the amber satellite LED will light solid. If you release the green power button at this point the receiver will be reset to its defaults and the ephemeris file will be deleted. The survey data and application files stored in the receiver will not be deleted if you release the green power button at this time.
5. At around 35 to 40 seconds ET the amber satellite LED will go off. Release the green power button. All three LEDs will now light for around 120 seconds while the receiver reformats its internal memory. When this operation is completed all three LEDs will flash off, on, and off, then light for about three seconds and go off. In about four or five seconds the green power LED will come on solid. Now the receiver is reset to factory defaults and the ephemeris file as well as all survey data and application files have been deleted from the internal memory.
Christ,
Using TBC for over a year now. Didn't like at first (just like an old dog). Won't go back to TGO now unless it's an old project. Right now I'm not a believer in VRS systems and don't think they are as consistent as a Base/Rover set up, but that's for another discussion.
Kris,
Yes, you are right where we were a while back. Now that we use TBC, GLONASS no problemo. I have finally been able to remove most, if not all of those TGO survey styles. Also why I double check the survey styles in both TSC2s to make sure they matched. Fortunately most of our systems are all R8/R8 now.
Avery,
Funny that you mention that. The system I am trouble shooting is from another office so I don't know it intimately anymore. (used to be my old system a few years back, but another office wanted a Model 2 system.) First thing I did was reboot and check all of the FW and SW.
I typed my first post in haste because I had to meet someone about a bridge so I sent the post and went to load up the system and head out and lo and behold, the Cosmonauts were now sending a solution. Had I not been in haste, I would have realized that after the reboot, it takes 15-30 minutes around here to re-gather the ephemeris.
Thanks for all the input, now back to you regularly scheduled troubleshooting of bad cables and short circuits.
