What do you do when you find a County ¼ corner (set by private surveyor under contract) nicely proportioned exactly between a section corner and a witness section corner 0.33 chains south of the actual corner in the road. The section corner and witness section corner are both GLO pipes and caps from 1913-1915.
I realize I need to go back and search for the original ¼ corner, which if existent is underground (I already looked above ground). What if the corner is lost, or was lost before the county proportion that is in error 12 years ago. Would you let the error stand or hold it as legitimate? Seems to me the proportioned corner should be about 0.165 chains further towards the WC. WC is stamped on the cap and clearly set out on the plat and notes.
Depends on reliance by others. If no harm done, reject the corner and set a new one. If that would much up a bunch of owners established lines that were established on reliance on that corner, use it, explaining what you found and why you did what you end up doing. Have you contacted the surveyor yet?

I just barely downloaded my data and figured it out. I haven't researched to see what effects it has already caused. I need the corner to split a parcel for some ranchers.
I haven't contacted the surveyor yet. I realize I should, past contacts over similar issues haven't gone that well. Seems it would be hard to dispute the error in this situation. Not like disputing whether a stone is original or not, this one is just a matter of the notes and the math.
I had intended to file a GPS coordinate and corner record to the state database and collect a bounty. I suppose that isn't going to happen. I have a 2-1/2 OPUS coordinate on the point. So I know precisely where the marker isn't supposed to be.
The WC is on the township line. Most of the TS line has been proportion further across the valley. I been wondering why the TS line isn't going down the middle of the road where you'd expect. Instead it's marked variously between the edge of the road and the south fence. Road is either a couple of rods wide or a chain wide between the long established fences. I'm I the only one that thinks maybe the road was built down the TS line? Wouldn't the road itself that has been in place for more than a hundred years be evidence of the original location of the TS line?
Just another day, another dollar. Chaos rules if you look into the details. If you're expecting exactness, land surveying shouldn't be your occupation of choice.
Actually I just figured it's probably OK. So never mind!!!!
Hate it, when that happens. A reminder for me to double check.

Check, Double Check and Triple Check. Then Think about it for about 2 days. Then, MAYBE, you open your mouth(keyboard) and say something.
Sure saves embarrassment. Wish I practiced it better.;-)

The biggest problem with arguing with yourself is that you always feel so incredibly stupid for losing the argument.

I let the math get me. I did the fieldwork couple of weeks ago (forever in my old brain). I checked it in the field with some quick and dirty calcs and the 1/4 seemed pretty good (close enough I ain't going to kick it around). So I went ahead and did my OPUS session. So today I get around to start working on it again, download the data and start a more precise analysis. Yup the proportioned 1/4 is about exactly between the SE Cor and the NE WC. Shouldn't be so. WELL , not so fast.
It can happen because the section line closing into the TS line from the south is 40 chains and then 40.30 chains (something I had sort of forgot since the fieldwork). So there you have it, the 1/4 proportioned properly and the 1/4 proportioned exactly between are essentially in the same place. Nice Eh?
Yup check, check, check and keep your mouth shut until you sure you've checked it enough!! Something like how much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood.
Good part is I'll be able to get paid for doing the work and I don't need to go back.
Geeze, I got to get a grip, Ridge might be getting free.:-S :-X
