I need some of you to download a quad or 2 from the USGS site to see what are your download speeds from the USGS site and if anyone experiences any slow speeds that won't do a download, only retrys or failed attempts during the download process. Most of the time when I try to download a quad, my speed varies from 2kb/s to 8kb/s and keeps fluctuating around this speed. I have tried on 3 different computers and they all do the same speed variations, 32 bit XP & Win 7 and 64 bit Win 7. I got with my DSL provider and they say the modem is running at the speeds that it is supposed to, so the problem appears not to be with my hookup. When I manage to get a download to work, the speeds are up around 100±kb/s, but this is very seldom. I have come to the conclusion that the problem has to be with USGS site and not a computer or modem problem.

Thanks

I am on a very old 32-bit XP Laptop and just downloaded 24mb in 45 seconds. But the second one of 24mb took 95 seconds. I am also on Charter cable that is 10 times faster than my old AT&T DSL. There would have been a big difference in download time on the DSL. I think you are correct about it being their site. It also can depend on the time of day. It is early morning for most of the country right now.

Thanks Scott. I downloaded a couple yesterday in the late afternoon that went right through the download process without getting the retry or fail message. I never paid too much attention to the download time, but the speeds fluctuated between 90.9kb/s± to 120kb/s which didn't pause any during the process. Haven't tried one today, so don't know what that will bring. I never had any download problems when they had the older download versions in either tiff or pdf format. Only started experiencing the timeout with this newer download format.
