The edition originally published in England was subtitled How the United States Was Shaped by the Greatest Land Sale in History.

The U.S. edition is subtitled How an Untamed Wilderness Shaped the United States and Fulfilled the Promise of Democracy.

I haven’t personally compared the two editions but I believe the content is essentially identical.

Chaining the Land

Bud Uzes book "Chaining the Land" has a good discussion on the various instruments of measurement. He says the steel tapes made in England were used in America by some surveyors by 1853 and extensively by the 1880's. He also says the The metal link chains "were the favored tool of surveyors for about 300 years based upon when their use was first reported in English Texts."
