Twas the Day of the Survey

Anybody heard from John Giles lately? Last Christmas he posted an original poem, which I have slightly tweaked to fit the way I hear the meter.----------------Twas the day of the survey, as we got to the siteThe neighbors all argued, getting ready to fightThe transit was plumbed, dead center on nailThe neighbors still fighting, soon they’d need bailPin finder was singing, a sound we desireDig a hole with the shovel, just an old piece of wireThe rodman fills hole, as I go search onPin finder not singing, this corner is goneI cross the meadow, toward corner twoPin finder starts singing, its sound ringing trueThis must be a pin, that sound is so greatGet rodman's attention, he starts to berateNow here! Now There! Where'd you want me to goHe dashes away madly, gives the shovel a throwWhere next will you send me? His feet are still draggingGET YOUR BUTT OVER HERE, BRING ME SOME FLAGGINGAs I watch the men argue, my rodman looks lostI realize I should have doubled the costHe finally comes to me, with flagging in tow“Where’s the shovel?” I ask, He shrugs, “I don’t know”He digs with his fingers, the prize soon is foundNot one, not two, but three pins in the ground!I look at all three, set hundredths from eachTheir caps all touching, what a day at the beachSearch the third corner, keeping rodman in sightNeighbors still fighting, as to which one is rightOnly one at this corner, real easy to findIt's lying by fence post, I’m losing my mind!I hope corner four, with luck will be thereNeighbors turn blue, as they continue to swearPin finder starts singing, it’s a beautiful soundWhere’s rodman gone now, nowhere to be foundI dig and I poke, with nail from my pocketStress growing unbound, eyes popping from socketI glance up to see, rodman quenching his thirstAs he drinks I yell, “Here, lets find this pin First!”He puts the jug down, wanders my wayFind corner in place, might be a good day!He walks up to me, face with grimace and smirkI ask “Where’s your rod now?”, he turns with a jerkI walk to the transit, can see all from hereNeighbors still fighting, but I’m in the clearWater jug calls me, thirsty as can beTilt it up to the sky, not a drop left for me!To corner the fourth, rodman makes his wayI sight on the prism, then yell, “Okay!”He walks to the post, leans rod on its sideI shoot post turn center, we’re catching our stride!He gets to the corner, where pins number three“hold on now” he yells, then darts off to peeI wait with patience, so thirsty and drySun on my head, I’m starting to fryWe shoot them all in, pin cushioned so tightI inverse to see, which one is rightPore over the plats, calc'late what’s missingRodman in bushes, and again he’s p**sing!I yell for the rodman, corners ready to setHe walks back to me, pouring with sweatI rub my brow, only salt left to wipeQuit sweating last hour, I’m losing my sight!Send rebar and hammer, to mark corner oneDehydrated and woozy, soon we’ll be doneSet one, then three, then there’s only one more!Have to set mine, where pin cushioned before!With last corner set, just four hundredths from threePut tansit in pack, neighbors walking toward meSo that’s where it goes, both neighbors surmiseThat’s what we thought, why’d we hire you two guysWe load up the truck, then we drove out of sightHAPPY SURVEYS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!

I had a Xmas miracle ride just a few minutes ago....

DEC 24, 2024, 24.67 MILES, AT 16:15( .6771) or .

0.323 until Dec 25.

You numbers people are going to freak....

I just stopped to end the ride and take the photo...

Merry Christmas Eve and Happy New year you bunch of surveyor people..
