I was out today trying to turn sets on some control. Setup on the first point, got a backsight (direct)and started my set, when the gun flopped (reversed) it did not find or track the prism. I went to the gun and manually pointed the gun (still in reverse) at the prim and hit search, it would hold on the prism for a second or two and then start searching. I repeated this many times with no luck, but as soon as I search the prism in the direct face it would find it every time. Topcon GPT-8005 running TDS. My question is, have any of you heard or seen this before? I also called Hayes and spoke with someone that said the robotic tech was out for lunch. I have not heard back from Hayes yet. Needless to say this has been a very frustrating day.

Hey Dan,
I run an 800 series robot and the only time I've had any trouble is when the laser window has become too dusty or gets fogged up. Try cleaning all the lensy-looking bits and see if that helps.
Whatever it turns out to be, please post the solution. This place can be an awesome repository of fixes!!

I have an old Robotic Topcon AP-L1 total station that I have inherited. It works well, but I have noticed that it is a little particular with the different prisms that I have concerning tracking (i.e. locking on). The Topcon 360 degree prism that I have it tracks very well with and i don't have any problems. I have a CST mini-prism that I use for a backsite that works fairly well most of the time, but sometimes it has trouble (especially in fine mode). I also have a large (i.e. regular sized) CST prism that it does not like. Especially at close distances. For long backsites it works ok, but otherwise it stays in the truck.

Do robotic instruments only like certain sized prisms?

I have had issues with my GPT 8005 A on occassion when the batteries get low. I use Omni 9600 prisms for both backsights and foresights. When the instrument starts acting funny, I generally go back to the inst and completely disconnect all power sources for about 30 seconds, and everything generally works after that.

I was told several years ago by a Lieca salesman to use the circular prisms for control work. This was when I was using Lieca gear, but I use that advice and I generally get good results.

I use a Topcon 8003 with TDS and when it starts acting funny it's usally a battery issue or some kind of interference, such as bright sunlight reflecting to the gun. I can't explain why it would only happen with the scope reversed, but that's the first thing I would check.

I'm like the other guys.... I'm thinking wonky battery in the system or your data collector needs a good hard reset.
