Anyone had one of the GPT-3000 series instruments EDM go out? My is acting up and getting worse, gives a E-68 error. I heard that the 3000 series had their problems. Mine has worked great until the last week or so, don't what to do, repair or replace.
Ask the dealer about replacing a motor in the edm rather than the entire EDM unit. Can save you a bundle. Email me if you want some more info.

The cause of an E-68 is a bad EDM. This is an extremely common problem on this model (if you look back you'll see that Topcon released a 3100 series model to correct this issue, and others shortly after). Normally the error is caused by a bad "Open Air Motor" on the EDM base. Unfortunately, this motor is not sold separately. Therefore, you need to find a dealer that has used ones that work or replace the whole EDM Base. Most f the time you're looking around 1600.00 or so for a used motor with installation. As a repair center I can tell you that it is a major repair and does take a lot of time. The biggest problem with finding a used motor...may not be that motor, then you're SOL.
My advice, trade it in on a new instrument, aside from this problem, there are other common ones as well. . Look for something with a simplified EDM that is easier to repair if needed in the future. Both Leica and Nikon are great for this. Changing an EDM base is around 3k. That's half a new instrument with increased technology and a warranty.

Yes, we have had exactly what you describe happen with a Topcon GPT-3005. And like the guy above says, it wasn't worth fixing.
Interesting...
I've had a number of errors show up in the past on mine, but then cleaned the battery contacts and the errors disappeared.
Your decision may already be made about your instrument. If not, you should know that at Hayes Instrument Company we have new motors in stock to repair your total station without replacing the whole EDM base assembly. It still isn't an inexpensive repair but it is something on the order of two-thirds less than replacing the whole assembly and probably back in the range that it worth considering doing.
If this is deemed inappropriate posting, I apologize. I am not in repairs and won't be near anyone's equipment with a screwdriver. Moderators, feel free to remove if I am even leaning on a rule.

Those are no longer supported for parts by Topcon but our service department can usually fix EDM motor issues with those units. (Referring to the GPT-3005 this thread is originally about.?ÿ Don't know about the GTS-750 series)
