Hello,

I am looking for some advice - I was wondering if some of you have Topcon ES/Sokkia CX total stations, does it really worth spending 10000$ for one of these.
If you own one do you regret you spent that much on non-robotic instrument? or you like it, if so what for 🙂 ?, isn’t it better to buy a used robot off ebay for like 7000?

I kind of like these units but they seem way too expencsive, on the other hand buying a used robot of ebay is a bit scary. I will probably go with a new short range reflectorless instrument.

(I am currently in Canda but plan to move back home and I would like to buy an instrument here and bring it with me.
By the way if you remember me - it was terrible to fly with 1.5 years old baby in tree aircrafts in a row, was not worth torturing baby .... but we did :()

I personally would not buy a used instrument off ebay, it's just too risky for the money involved. On the other hand if you buy the ES you will probably be wishing you had a robotic.

Are there any dealers in your area that may have some used robotic instruments? That may be the best option.

I think Topcon now makes a robotic model DS 200
for around 15k.
Looks similar to ES

It has internal bluetooth Class 1, so I'm guessing just
about any newer Data collector with internal bluetooth 2.0+
would reach out 500-600' without external radios.

You might want to look into that model for a demo.

Thank you for your information.
I noticed geomax makes long range reflectorless instruments (400m range) for like 7000$, not sure if the number is correct.
i am also trying to find prices for new short range (200m) reflectorless instruments... I do not count manufacturers like South etc.

The guys at Hayes Instruments can get you in the right instrument, either new or used, for a reasonable price. They sold me a Sokkia Set 3X three years ago and they beat the price of our local survey supply retailer by 20%.
