We finaly got to run a small closed traverse with our new Topcon ES 105(5 second that reads to 1 or 5 seconds set to read 1 second). A few weeks ago myself and some others wanted some info on this new instrument. I thought I would post some results for others that are interested in this gun. It is a nice middle to low end reflectorless non robot instrument with bluetooth. We also got a new Spectra Precision data collector running Survey Pro 5.0.1. We GPSed some cotrol on the project. The project is near City Hall. We used our roof mount and an iron on the project. We could shoot the roof mount from the iron. We setup on the iron and I paced a prism on the roof. We shot the reflector 3 times for a check. The distances checked 0.01, 0.005, and 0.005. This is typical for us to check GPS points this close. Some say you can check to 0.10 but I would reject points that don't check under the famous 0.04 and get the shakes over 0.02 (grid brought up to ground). Being a governemt department I can take the time for long occupations. We share our info with any surveyor who wants it and I make damned sure it can be relied on because I will see it again when I review the plat. I would cry if I had to reject something I had provided. Next I replaced the prism with a 3" "candy cane". The reflectorless shot within 0.03 to the face of the cane, on the money. By the way the distance was 533.035 if I remember correctley. Our procedures are to leapfrog using 3 tripods with 3 sets of direct and indirect doubled angles on traverse points. I hate to confess that one tripod is aluminum and the tribracs have not been adjusted lately. The shots were approx. 115 feet with the longest of about 200. Not good I know but it is a small project. There were 6 setups with 2 breaks, 1 for lunch and we had to finish the next morning. We had umpteen sideshots for locations and 60 year old fat men walk and think slow. The results were 1 to 58,315 (958 total distance) with 17 seconds in angles and a closing distance of 0.017. Not to bad. We like this gun. It takes fast shots in both modes. There is one more thing that might be a factor, the crew. We are both PLSs. I have 41 years and Tommy has 25 years and we have worked together 15 years. I will post more if there is interest or e-mail me and we can talk.
good info mike. i figured the gun was up to it. obviously the procedures were sound.
how did you like the feel of the gun? as good as the older topcons? my buddy was worried about the reconfiguration of the knobs. any problems?
I have not run it as much as Tommy but not to bad. Not as good as the old models and different location but you will get use to it.
