Just got a Topcon DL 102 digital level and I'm trying to get it running with my data collector. I am using the standard Topcon serial cable to connect it to the data collector.

I can apparently trigger the measurement process as the little bird fly's across that tiny little LCD screen but I always end up with and Error 94 code. I know from the manual that I have it is a communications error but I am hoping that maybe someone will have a little more info. on what may be causing it.

I did a Google search but have yet to come across anything that will better explain the error code.

No experience with the digital levels but the topcon total stations would give an e-83 which was a communications error. Similar behavior, trigger a shot and get an e-83 about the time it should've been sending the data to the collector. It was always a loose connection or a cable with a bad wire.

Seems to me I remember collecting data internally and downloading later.
Why would you add a DC ? The observations display upon reading, and I believe you can recall shot numbers from the DL-102.

Mostly for ease of use. Tired entering BM names using their numeric keypad and it is just a PITA.

The cable I am using is the same one that is used with our total station and it works fine. I think it has to be a communication setting.

From what I remember you have to set the out module to RS-232C this wil allow two way comunication with the level.

Done that. I have been in contact with a Topcon repair shop that I use. They are going to try and track down more info. on that error code.

Topcon Error

One of my favorite things about Topcon:
You call your repair shop and ask a question, and they do not know.
You call Topcon directly (and it takes a bit to find the right number) and they refuse to talk to you(and wonder aloud how you have the number).
You have to talk to the repair shop that doesn't know anything.
The factory will talk to them not to you.

Are all the manufactures this out of touch?

Topcon Error

One of the reasons that I prefer Leica. I have found them to be much easier to get help from. Using Topcon is a company choice, not mine!

Topcon Error

I hooked up our DL-102 to my crusty, but very trusty HP48 Survey Pro that I bought in 1998 and it works. I used the default settings in TDS by selecting Topcon as Instrument and DL-100 as the model. Baud rate is set at 1200, parity set at even. Hope this helps
