I ran up on this last week, believe it or not the top of it turned our to be only 1' horizontally away from the calculated position and there was no trace of the original unless this is the original.
looks semi-permanent to me.- what is the diameter of the tree?
From the height of your tripod you must be a tiny fellow.
They probably post a flag in it on the 4th of July.
Dan, thats what your girl said about you...it's got nothing to do with me my friend.
You do get the concept of a robotic total station right? Sometimes the best statigic setup is a low one...
Maybe it is the original and the base is at the corner? Whatever it is intended to represent, someone went to some trouble to secure that pipe in place.

I'm not sure what's funnier;
a) That it's stuck in the tree
b) It's within a foot of being correct
c) that you actually shot to it
- Great story anyway
- You can't make this stuff up
A Foot From The Calculated Corner ?
First question is that calculated point in the tree?
It is unusually high, however.
Paul in PA
A Foot From The Calculated Corner ?
No Paul, the calc pont was 1' away from the top of the pipe in the direction away from the tree.
I See One of My Bars
from time to time as I drive down the highway. You can't miss it. It's a lot like the pipe in a tree. The client pulled it when he dug a new hole for a major corner post. He then drove my bar, with cap in place, into the side of a power pole about two feet to the east and on line.
If it had a downward slope ....
I'd blame it on Perry trying to tap a tree for sap.
If it had a downward slope ....
It's close enough, now set up on it!
