We've been working on a mile long road project since this past winter. We had already located the affected property corners/lines. One of them was a large stone with an X carved in the top. It had stood as the corner for 100 years or more and had a fence post as a guard as well as a large hardwood right beside it. Knowing it would be destroyed, we were going to try and relocate it because it was so cool. We went today to locate some borings. They had bulldozed along the centerline and the old stone was gone. It didn't take much searching to find the large hardwood pushed into the woods. Still entwined in its roots was the old stone. I don't know if we'll be able to retrieve it or how we would at this point. We would sure love to display it somewhere....

Well, you'll probably dull a chain or two, but why wouldn't you just cut the roots with a chainsaw to free the stone?

Cutting it out of the roots will be a chore. Getting it out.... We're going to try and make friends with one of the guys riding the yellow monster because I don't think there's a man alive that can tote that thing to the truck. It's quite a ways to the nearest area we can drive to. If we wait til they grade it so we can drive to it, it'll be destroyed.

I hate seeing old monuments like that being destroyed. Couldn't they just leave it sticking up out of the middle of the road?:-P
