A client needs to build 2 miles of fence along the south lines of Section 7 and Section 8. They were going to just find all the corners themselves and “line up” between them. Because there are a number of Tracts along the west Township line and the line is in break country I advised them to get someone out there if they weren’t sure. Anyway, after a few months of them asking questions and the ranch manager looking for monuments he still wasn’t sure enough to just go ahead and I came out to run the two miles. It’s about 1-1/2 hour drive one way from the office and the section lines run through the “breaks” that lie east of a river valley. It’s where two intersecting valleys dump their streams into the main river so that there is quite a bit of “flat” land around the ranch’s main building area and the line isn’t too bad topographically.

This spring the river broke through along the east side of the valley and it moved course over ½ a mile. A classic case of avulsion.

SW corner Section 7 (1947 dependent resurvey).

GPS almost on line looking to the east from the SW corner of Section 7. The horizon is about 1 mile away and right at 500’ higher in elevation.

S1/4 Section 7.

SE corner Section 8-in the flat land.

High tech water hole. This needed to be on the neighbor’s land in Section 17 and it was; but by only about 30’. That really isn’t enough room for a stock tank and I assume the fence will be jogged north to give the cattle some area to gather up.

Getting up from the SW corner of Section 8. The monument is set in an unstable slope and I set a 40’ witness corner on the hilltop to the west and on the south line of Section 7. The picture doesn’t show it very well but the corner is 40’ east and 32’ lower-to give some perspective of how steep the slope is. It’s nice to have help and those two hiked up and down the slopes as fast as I did.

Hiking a bentonite covered ridge-wouldn’t want to be here if it’s raining. We are looking for an alternate route for the fence. Old posts of a previous fencing solution can just be seen.

Possible tie in point from the east.

Got to the site at 9:30 and set up. Staked the witness corner and set line points on each crossing ridge top and each road crossing for the two miles. Finished at 2:30 and headed home. Would have been done sooner but they wanted to look over some other boundary issues beside the new fence line while they had me there. Boy was that fun. I'm spending way too much time in the office anymore.

looked to be a little bit cool out there. Those pcs remind me of days when I surveyed further east. sometimes "See" farther than the old K&E could shoot. Don't have that problem around here too much.

Thanks for posting the pics.

When I picked up the base and looked southwest the mountains were very clear-about 75 miles. The temp. stayed around 55 and just the right amount of wind. Perfect for work. Could not find a cloud.
