Gents,
Thanks for all the input comparing Leica VIVA Sets of Angles vs. Traverse with the TCRP1203 for typical traverse with multiple sets to foresight, sets to sideshots, etc.
I will likely get a demo license for Traverse and see how smoothly it runs and if I can assign it to a function key shortcut, etc. I do want the ability to check the sets, but not too keen on generating a traverse file or doing traverse adjustment onboard the instrument in the field. I prefer to quick check my closure in the field with COGO inverses and do adjustment of raw data afterwards in the office.
On a related note, for a single set (D/R) the VIVA seems to have a FUNC command in the main survey menu named Fn2Face (mentioned at page 1685 of the manual) which I had assumed was just a motor command to reverse face. But apparently in ATR mode it will measure the shots in F1 and F2, average the results and return to F1. I haven't tried it yet to see how it works and how it records in raw data. This would be worthwhile for sideshots that need a quick d/r observation.
Back about 15 years ago, Pierre DeBlois with the Canadian Leica group wrote a sweet data collection program named DataPro for use with the TPS-1100 series (not to be confused with a later Leica GIS program by the same name). It was a North American surveyor's routine that covered most of the basics in one package. Discontinued.
I was hoping someone had already written what we called QuickGuides, for running the VIVA with the TCRP1203. If you know of a simple QuickGuide, written by a North American, I would appreciate a copy.
Happy New Year.
Thanks and regards,
Mike

the 2face measurement takes a direct and indirect measurement, compares the two measurements from a predetermined tolerance, and stores it as one single measurement. so, keep in mind it is still based on a single backsight measurement. not good enough for some people's preferences
CarlsonSurvCE had the same function in the standard sideshot menu. You had the option of taking the sideshot in two faces and selecting distance be taken, at both faces, or just one.
hello Moe,
that would be correct if you set your backsight using a single face. our company tends to set backsights using an average of 2 faces for any work where you intend to use 2 faces also to foresights or side shots.
Moe, Thanks for caution about Fn2Face not returning to backsite. So it doesn't qualify as an actual set. The devil is in the details...
