Depends on the vintage of your Ranger. The newer ones 500, and I assume the newer 3 series have a smart charger that will stop charging and apply a float charge when full. There is also a blinking green indicator. The older batteries simply seemed to charge forever. They have some sort of internal temperature sensor, but it is questionable how well it worked. The 200 series seemed to overcharge/wreck batteries and ruin the lcd screen pretty quickly. What are you using?

If you can figure out in the data collector how to set Windows CE so that the screen doesn't turn on every time external power is connected to it... then I would put the thing on a cheap timer. Set it to run for 8 hours every night so it will fully charge in case you use it, and leave it permanently connected. At least it won't be overcharging for days or weeks on end when not in use, and will be good to go when you need it.
