Colleagues-

Anyone New York surveyors "follow his footsteps" ?

Cheers,

Derek

PS-

For a period of time my great great grandfather worked on the Erie Canal after needing to leave for about 10 years due to his participation in the 1837 Rebellion.

John Randel Jr Manhattan Surveyor

At the NYSAPLS Conference in January, Lemuel Morrison, LS, gave a presentation on his efforts to retrace John Randel's footsteps from 1st Street to 155th St. by searching Central Park for traces of original traverse points. The book by Marguerite Holloway has received good reviews. I'm sure some New York City surveyors can add to this...

John Randel Jr Manhattan Surveyor

Her book, The Measure of Manhatten, is a great read for surveyors. She demonstrates an amazing grasp of the theory and practice, etc.
PLUS, Scott Z. Is not only mentioned, but cited in the footnotes!

Buy it and read it.

David Doyle is also prominently featured and quoted.
I can't recommend this book enough. It is intelligently written and highly entertaining.
I do wonder, though, if any one but a surveyor would get as much out of it aside from the history, which in itself is worth the price of the book.
