I recently acquired a Surface Pro 4 for use on a job that's going to require me to download a bunch of receivers at various sites. Many of those receivers are 4000SSi models, and I was taking a gamble on being able to make a 2016 computer talk to a 1990s-era receiver.
The Surface Pro doesn't have a serial port, so I bought a USB adapter cable with the FTDI chipset, installed the current version of Trimble Data Transfer, and gave it a go. It took me a few tries to get everything set up right -- I had to set the baud rate for the port using Device Manager as well as specifying it in Data Transfer -- but once I did it connected and downloaded without a hitch. Woohoo!
