Once you get used to the Javad LS or LS+, You will never regret it.

Did you just get an LS, to use off an RTN, or did you get a base to use with it?

Well, current prices vary. If you get cell modem installed, more $. If you get the PLUS version, more money.

I think you can even get a one watt TX radio installed. (Or used to).

And, there are some variables.?ÿ

Not all LS's have the same options, and price.

I got it on some promotional thing, which knock a few k off the top, but at full retail itƒ??s roughly the price of a Leica GS16. When you consider the DC is basically built in, youƒ??re talking about 5-6k less than that.

Iƒ??n not looking to go expanding this company much, but needed additional gear. Though Iƒ??ve been running strictly green gear for the past 20 years or so, Iƒ??m at the point where broadening the horizons a bit is both more plausible and kinda fun. Hence the geomax/carlson robot last winter and now this.

running up against the sunsetting of 3.5G modems in the DCs at the end of the year might mean another one or two of these make more sense than replacing those. One of the reasons I pulled the trigger now. Being absolutely buried in work being the other.

Well.....?ÿ that's a good thing being the cost of this equipment after looking at their website again as curious. Yeah, I know its the "BEST"...?ÿ so no need for a justification discussion from whom has purchased this equipment etc...?ÿ but man...?ÿ that cost is absolutely nuts.?ÿ : /?ÿ I am sure you'll make it up quick though.?ÿ ; )

One thing I definitely know, the Survey field isn't for the poor man...?ÿ either can afford it, or owe the rest of your life.

Well, Mr Tim, I don't like what I'm fixin to say, but I don't see my way around it.

5 yrs ago, when I first moved over to javad gear, I paid around 22k for a base, rover, and radio. That was hard.

It had a lagging problem in the base. The base (Triumph 2) was limited to USA, and GLONASS satellites.it could also use a part of Galileo, and a part of Bideu. Not really a "full constellation system". Shawn Billings told me that bang for the buck, it was what he recommended. They told me that the software to fully take advantage of bideu, and Galileo was not yet fully written, so I'd not see any advantage by purchasing the "full constellation system". He said that in a few years, that it would work to buy the "full constellation system" I followed his advice. If you buy a full constellation system from javad today, with only radio for base to rover corrections, you will pay something around 28-30k. To add the cell modem to it adds around 2k.

The system I bought out performed EVERYTHING out there at the time, in canopy, at the expense of a few hundredths accuracy.

Well, now the company has changed the hardware of the base, and of the rover. And, is busy re-writing some of the algae rhythms, so that it is either the best, or near the best at getting shots in canopy that there is.

I have just upgraded my base to a Triumph 3. It's a full constellation system now. I really should also send my LS in, with around 6k and they will rebuild it, so that it has new hardware, cell modem, (Verizon and AT&T). But, that'll have to wait a little.?ÿ

Buying, using, and staying current with GPS is just the cost of doing business. No different than buying gas and tires for your survey chariot. You just HAVE to factor in the fact that it's better to use a modern automobile/truck/van/, and pay for its gas, than to walk, or ride a mule.

If you want to stay current, with your gear, of ANY brand, you will have initial expense of over 20k, and then an additional expense of 10k every 3 yrs, to stay current. Exception to this is some of the Chinese knockoff gear. But, that comes with its own issues. I have decided to avoid those issues.

I feel that if you buy the latest and greatest gear from javad, you will have the very best money can buy. Yes, there is some stuff to learn, but as you learn it, you will be functioning on the highest level as a surveyor can technology speaking.

Don't skimp on tires, as you will never recoup the cost of the lost time. And don't skimp on your GPS gear. You will not recoup the lost time you spend keeping up with your mistakes.

This is just my opinion. I don't work for ANY Mfr. Of GPS gear. I just send them my money.

Your business model should set aside 500 a month, or 6k per year, for equipment.

If you don't, you will fall behind technology wise. Then, you will have to cough up 30k in one lump, to play catch up.

Would I do it again? Yes. Why am I vocal, (here and over at the javad forum) about this stuff? Because many surveyors have fallen behind. They need some "hand holding", and training, to get the courage to move with technology.?ÿ

My favorite funny story about this is a local surveyor, named C. I demoed my javad gear for him. He bought it. It was too much of a change for him to learn. His grandson came along, learned it, and is running it like a boss.

Grandson is staying busy, and grandpa is reviewing all the data, and making decisions. And they are working together.

It's working for them.

There are many surveyors out there who need encouragement, and direction.

My dad went surveying with me with my javad gear 2x. He was hard to work with. He kept cutting line, and shouting, "wave your arms" He worked til he was 87. He went to his eternal reward a few months back.

I want to see all surveyors to know that the future is here, and to help them participate in it.

@timd1971?ÿ

for a network rig itƒ??s a solid 10k cheaper than the green or yellow stuff. Itƒ??ll pay for itself in about 3 jobs.
