Was wondering something last night... If I were to take a shot with my GPS here in TN, then walk about 200 feet in a direction towards sydney Australia, store the point.... Then stake to that line while standing Sydney Australia, would my GPS left and right and tell me to cut 344,864,520 feet, or just be totally confused?
You would see a bunch of ???????
Just what I needed. Thanks for putting it all in perspective.
Well, it depends. Various software handle this problem differently. It would probably tell you right, left, and station. But, you'd have to move your base station. Or, use floats, if the base were in USA, and the rover, in Australia, because they would not have any sats in common. I suggest a post processed solution. more or less.
When you exit the area of the imbedded geoid model the GPS will be confused and give you ? marks. Now if you stand in TN and stake to a point in OZ im not sure, you could give it a try.
To clarify, my post was written to the OP. @MightyMoe , if you were responding to me, thanks. At the time, I was fuming over the inability of a previous surveyor on a simple lot survey. The OP was just the thing to take my mind off that issue.
Through this exchange I see where the old format had some advantage.
My great-grandpa told me the black box is always correct, in a Tweet. He told me he learned that from his grandpa who surveyed with Abe Lincoln in Wyoming.

Nah, I was only replying to the OP. I've had some experience with exiting the parameters of a projection and seeing what it does in the DC;)

Did you know two of John Tyler's (b.1790) grandchildren are still alive?
