I have two Sokkia GSR2700 IS. The radio is no longer working on one of the units. I was thinking of keeping that unit as the base and the other as the rover. They have internal UHF Satel Radios. Does anyone know what type of external base radio I can purchase that will be compatible with the internal radio on the rover? The local survey shops here aren't very helpful.

I can't help you with this specific problem but keep in mind that you can "convert" both units to Network Rovers by having a Data Collector capable of having internet via 3G or Wifi and by using SurvCE.
If this case suits you I can guide you how to do it.

If the internal radios are Satel the logical conclusion would be to use Satel at the base as well:

http://www.satel.com/product/satelline-easy-pro

We tested one of these, they blow the Pacific Crest radios away - better range, lower power consumption, no heat related issues, etc.

They don't have a dealer locator on their page, but if you contact them I'm sure they'd tell you who the nearest dealer is. These guys in Baton Rouge, LA handle them and are very knowledgeable, but they're Leica guys, they're not going to know how to configure Sokkia gear:

I had the same GPS units here until about a year ago when we sold them and updated to one network rover. They worked well with the Satel radio, which I kept. Its a Satel Epic marked "Satelline-3ASd/125/10W/DIV". I believe I was told that the "125" in that number designates that its 12.5 kHz narrowband compliant. 10W obviously means 10W output. On that issue, I previously had a 35W PaCrest PDL on a different system and didn't think there was any difference in the operating range between the two radios. I think they were pretty equal, its just something in the way each manufacturer measured the output power. The Satel output is selectable (I think 1W, 5W and 10W) to save on battery drain when working close to the base. But then you just might think of using the internal radios... which had very good range when replacing the stubby little 3" Sokkia antenna with a 10" gainflex.

The beauty of that radio is that I could set the GPS base receiver up and use the INTERNAL radio in the Sokkia, then go to a nearby (within a mile or two - 3 miles in flat country) high spot and set the EXTERNAL Satel to work as a repeater. It was a simple setting on the radio menu and then you could work many miles from the base. I remember up to 9 miles but that will vary based on terrain. Its a good radio.

I have a Pac Crest PDL Base radio but I cannot get it to connect. The band on the external is 25 kHz and the internal satel radio on the rover says 12.5 kHz. Could this be the reason? I have both the external and internal radios set to the same frequency. I am using Surv CE 2.6 on Carlson Explorer 2. I am currently waiting for a quote for a Satel Radio as we speak.

If I remember correctly from the 12.5KHz changeover, 12.5KHz rovers can work with 25KHz bases; 25KHz rovers cannot work with 12.5KHz bases. It's more likely that there is some protocol difference between the Satel and the Pac Crest.

Lee D,
I just bought a Satel EASy Pro external radio. I am just waiting for the cable to come in next week so I can hook it up and try it out. I was looking at my data collector under the RTK tab and I do not have Satel Easy Pro in the list to select. These are the options I have available: Internal Satel; Satel 35W; Satel 3AS; Satel 2AS; Satel Satelline. Will any of these work if selected? I am using a Carlson Explorer II with Surv CE 2.62. I have already e-mailed Carlson to find out what settings I should use.

Your best bet there is Satel 35W. I use Trimble data collectors, they have a generic radio option that I used and it worked fine. The issues I encountered had more to do with the Trimble internal rover radios but since your Sokkias have Satel internal you should be good to go.

Edit - It least with Trimble, often the specific radio modules have more to do with being able to program the radio through the data collector than they do with the data itself - as long as the baud rate, parity, etc. are all good you usually won't have a problem.
