Is this a DSL modem/router or a Cable modem/router? If it's a DSL connection, your phone company can likely upgrade the box on the house to the newer style where each circuit has a built-in fuse. It saved me a bunch of times before I made the switch to cable.

Check with your provider and see if they can add the fuse at the box, if memory serves, it also splits the line at the box so you don't need filters at all of the voice lines. You can put the voice line on one pair and the DSL on the other pair. I'm a belt and suspenders sort, so I'd also run the line through the phone ports on a surge strip before connecting to the modem.

Lightning usually comes in thru the telephone hard wiring.
Use as many wireless connections as possible to avoid losing more valuable peripherals and circuit boards.
