I've a few older Schonstedts (GA-52 and GA-52B) I bought used and that seem to need adjusting. One of them "nulls out" sometimes when it goes over a rebar instead of sounding off and also seems to lack depth when it does function. I suspect the variable "pot". Maybe they were cobbled up with the cheaper linear ones then sold to me?

I'd replace it myself rather than send it in if it were just that, but don't know where to get the part. I seem to recall it has a non-linear R curve.

Schonstedt won't repair the older models anymore, and $100 off isn't much for the detector that I prefer over a new one anyway. I've tried another repair center, and got my GA-92XTd back and could hardly hear it. They claim it's normal, but my hearing hasn't gone downhill that much!

Does anyone here repair their own GA-52s? I have a fair sense around electronics.

Schonstedt fixed mine and refused to apply any guarantee, that was 5rys ago and it is still working.
Whatever they did, the ear jack quit working and they won't fix it alone.
When I sent it in I simply wanted a few brackets fixed and some knobs and a speaker.
They said it was not that simple and sent me back my guts in a new lightweight housing with plastic knobs.
They are trying to rid themselves of the old mother board.
I'd upgrade except I really don't like the 9v models.
I have another that I refused to send in and it is still humming like a champ and I've fabricated parts to keep it together.
Schonstedt have distanced themselves from the once friendly repair shop once implying that they can fix anything and is moving toward that "you need a new one" buy or go home attitude.

This shop in Dallas does a decent repair, I've used them since

You could try the Subsurface folks. I met one of the owners at a NY Conference soon after they started the firm. At that time, the would repair Schonstedts; not a surprise, since the Subsurface owners used to work there. It may be worth a try.

That's the shop that insists their repair of my GA-92XTd is OK, even after I sent it back again.

Since the sound is the only problem, try earphones, they improve the process.

Don't need more gear, especially with a cord, under what can be trying conditions like hands full of shovel and pole and lotsa brush.

🙁

This fits in my pocket and has been in service over 10yrs and

has allowed me to find rods, pipes and nails that I could not using the external speaker.
