I talked to an Olde friend / surveyor today that has been with an outstanding firm for the last 27 years. He informed me that this Friday will be his last day with the firm.

His company is going under and will be no longer operate in two weeks.

The last 3 years has completely destroyed this once 65+ employee company.

The ownership tried to carry the once thriving firm, but the summer months were not at all profitable and the plug is being pulled before the owner himself goes under. From what I understand, the owner has spent almost all his retirement in covering expenses the last couple years. Somewhere to the tune of over 350K of his own money.

The week before Thanksgiving will see 35+/- employees hitting the unemployed ranks, 4 being LS's

Yes, it seems to be getting worse in a lot of places.

I know more surveyors who have been laid off then are actively employed.

I wonder what % will return to the industry?

I see this and it hits me with a heavy heart. I loved surveying and the job that I did. I feel for the companies and hard working people that are so affected and devastated by this economy.

That had to be one of, if not the hardest thing that owner had to do.

CRAP!!

Diversify or move.

I echo Julie's sentiment, sad times indeed...

Also, Holy Cow is correct.

That's a good question

As there is now an over supply of surveyors in the market place for the demand of work.

It has been two years this month since I was laid off. It caused us to have to move and completely re-think our retirement plans. When we moved, naturally I contacted all the surveyors within reasonable driving range about employment. I guess i'll not be able to return the the profession I dearly loved for 40+ years. To all those in the same boat, and those about to be, you have my sympathy, it really is a hard adjustment to make.:-)

Robert, the voice of experience speaking. Those with the glib answers based on opinion without that experience, should be quickly rejected. Usually very poor advice.
